At first, the news was that Jadeveon Clowney was going to Cleveland for a workout (’tis the season for that sort of thing).

Mike Garafolo of The NFL Network with the update: “Possible reunion: DE Jadeveon Clowney is visiting the #Browns today, source says. Following an 8.5-sack season with the #Cowboys, Clowney is exploring another stint in Cleveland, where he had 11 sacks in two seasons from 2021-22.”

Consider, as well, what Jordan Schultz had to say on the matter.

“The #Browns hosted DE Jadeveon Clowney on a visit today,” Schultz clarified, “which was considered successful, and the two sides will remain in contact as they have for weeks. My understanding is there’s also an NFC West team in the mix that is very interested in Clowney, per sources. It’s unclear if he’ll take another visit as of this moment.”

Looking around a bit more could involve seeing that KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson offered his own Clowney update. Wilson clarifies that the Browns, Seahawks, and Texans are among the teams interested in employing the veteran edge rusher. Wilson then points toward “several other teams [with interest] as his market continues to grow.”

Jadeveon Clowney a Popular Man in NFL

An obvious detail: these insiders are doing some work for the player.

Ostensibly, the reason for these social media posts is to tell the masses about the NFL’s interest in the veteran pass rusher. Well and good. But then there’s another question to ask: who is feeding the information to these reporters?

They’re not doing anything wrong if they’re getting information from the agent and/or player, but the point is that these updates help to generate a hotter market for the pass rusher. There is, in other words, some reason not to take leave of your senses. Maintain some healthy skepticism while digesting the news. Social media updates are precisely that: social media updates.

For the Vikings, the question comes around to how much the team wants his services, if at all. Extending Brian O’Neill creates some added cap space to play with if there’s a desire to send out a contract. What if the social media smoke points toward a real fire? Minnesota needs to ask that question.

In 2025, Jadeveon Clowney played some strong football for the Dallas Cowboys. Most impressive from within his statistics are the 8.5 sacks. That’s a healthy amount, especially for somebody who would fill the EDGE3 job. Better yet, Clowney tossed up 10 quarterback hits and 12 tackles for loss. He had 4 passes defended, 2 fumble recoveries, and 1 forced fumble.

Playing in 3-4 defenses in the past is a nice boost for Clowney’s hypothetical fit as a Vikings pass rusher. And then there’s the simple reality of having played in the NFL since 2014. Brian Flores is a frisky fella, an aggressive DC who will stretch the veteran. The veteran, though, will be capable of corralling what’s thrown at him.

Note that he got chosen at No. 1 in the 2014 NFL Draft due to being built like a cyborg specifically designed to harass quarterbacks. He stands at 6’5″ and weighs 266 pounds while running a wild 4.53 forty going into the draft. Just for context, Harrison Smith ran a 4.54 forty, meaning Clowney came in faster than the safety.

Since playing for the Texans, Clowney has been around the NFL. He has spent time with the Seahawks, Titans, Browns, Ravens, Panthers, and Cowboys. That Seattle stay has raised eyebrows since Nolan Teasley, the new GM in the Twin Cities, was working in The Emerald City at the time.

He last played on a contract accounting for just $3.5 million on the cap, per Over the Cap. Clearly, he’s not going to demand huge money in the same way as a younger option. Clearly, he hasn’t yet seen his number hit.

One can only assume that teams have made offers, if only in an informal manner. Does a team need to surpass the number he demanded last season to play for Jerry Jones? The Vikings could easily fit something in the range of $5 million into the budget.

Jadeveon Clowney is 33. He’d instantly make the Vikings’ pass rush more dangerous.
