Last week, Justin Jefferson said that the passer battle in Minnesota is one where it’s “all up for grabs.”

The Vikings’ WR1 chatted with ESPN’s “This is Football.” Surprisingly enough, Jefferson did the interview in uniform in front of Little Ceasars pizza boxes. Unsurprisingly, he was asked about the passer battle that’s taking place between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy. Jefferson’s reflections focused on the improvement contained in McCarthy and the leadership needed from Murray.

Consider the various factors working against McCarthy last year:

• He was an oft-injured, sophomore passer making his NFL debut.
• The running game wasn’t consistently featured.
• The offensive line was injured a ton, a particularly tough outcome since Ryan Kelly was being leaned on for mental heavylifting.
• He was being asked to adjust his mechanics on the fly.
• At no point in 2025 did the Vikings make him truly compete to start.

All of these factors made life difficult for the kid. None of these factors fully absolve him for all of his football sins.

Justin Jefferson, to his great credit, never allowed his frustration to push him toward being unprofessional. A strong team leader, Jefferson worked through his most humble NFL season due to the passer play being so bad and yet didn’t implode as so many others would have.

The Vikings, to the team’s great credit, have sought to rectify the issue by introducing Kyler Murray into the mix. Doing so will either push McCarthy to a new level or involve Murray stealing away the QB1 job.

Jefferson sees value in McCarthy needing to “step up his game a little bit and have to just be that dog.” Battling on a daily basis, per Jefferson, will help McCarthy. Later on, Jefferson called McCarthy’s growth “tremendous.” Truth be told, anything other than tremendous improvement over last year won’t be good enough.

And some of what Jefferson had to say about the free agency addition: “And for K1, it’s just all about coming in and being that leader that we expect him to be.” Not too long afterwards, Jefferson spoke on behalf of the team as a whole, indicating that “we know he’s a playmaker.”

J.J. McCarthy needs to grow his physical abilities. Become a better passer. Kyler Murray needs to bring leadership to the mix. Become a consistent presence from an intangibles perspective.

Perhaps the most important point of his answer rested in what these quarterbacks are capable of doing for the team as a whole. Head coach Kevin O’Connell seemed to be singing a similar song with the recent “elevator” comments.

“We need a quarterback to fill in that leadership role,” Jefferson explained, “so whoever is stepping up to that plate and really guiding us to where we would like to be at, that’s the main one that’s going to have that role. But it’s all up for grabs.”

Justin Jefferson, 27, is entering his seventh NFL season. So far, he has never been beyond the opening round of the playoffs, going 0-2 in his pair of trips. The competitor will want to start making noise in the final tournament before too long.

Jefferson’s Vikings have welcomed all of the talent back to TCO Performance Center, meaning the starter’s pistol has sounded on the passer battle.
