Jets fans wondering how running back Braelon Allen was coming along after suffering a season-ending injury last season finally got an answer when he met with the press the other day. Speaking in front of the Jets beat, Allen revealed the fact that he has now bulked up to a whopping 250 pounds.
Drafted at around 235 pounds and already viewed as a potential bruiser out of the backfield, the added weight could make Allen that much more of an issue for opposing defenses. Allen hopes to finally break out after what can only be described as a disappointing start to his young career.
The Wisconsin product flashed from time to time as a rookie, but was largely ineffective as he finished up the season averaging just 3.4 yards per carry on an offense that never really gave him enough chances to get into a rhythm. While he did appear in every game as a rookie, Allen saw double-digit carries just three times and had five attempts or less ten times.
Hoping to make his mark in year two, Allen didn’t make it beyond the first quarter of the season. Playing special teams in week four, he sustained a sprained MCL which required surgery and knocked out for the season.
With year three on the horizon, the best offensive line he’s played behind and what should be improved quarterback play, Allen should see opportunities to shine that he hasn’t in the past. Offensive coordinator Frank Reich has had enough success calling plays to give reason for optimism, and if he runs the ball as much as expected, Allen could be a legitimate beneficiary.
With Breece Hall locked in at the top of the depth chart with Allen and Isaiah Davis behind him, the Jets have the horses to win on the ground. By packing on the type of muscle Allen has, he now gives the Jets what could be a high-level option on short yardage and goal line situations.
While you shouldn’t expect the Jets to be a full on Rex Ryan “Ground and Pound” type of offense, don’t be surprised if they lean on Hall, Davis and the bulked up Allen to keep the ball away from opposing offenses whenever they manage to get a lead.
