Vikings QB1 Odds Just Got More Interesting

Minnesota Vikings

Last month, the Minnesota Vikings’ upcoming quarterback battle featured a clear frontrunner, Kyler Murray, with -1000 odds to win the QB1 job in September. Now, those odds have shrunk just a bit, with third-year passer J.J. McCarthy narrowing the margin.

Murray will still likely take home the top job, but McCarthy’s momentum cannot be wholly ruled out.

The New Odds

Training camp is about four weeks away, and FanDuel has updated odds that look like this:

Kyler Murray: -770
JJ McCarthy: +520
Carson Wentz: +7000

For curious minds, a -770 moneyline is akin to a No. 1 seed defeating a No. 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

And for math heads, McCarthy’s odds are 16.1%.

What Happened?

Out of the gate in early June, Murray said the right things on the microphone, while McCarthy sounded like a youngster who told “too much of the truth” about the quarterback competition. Sounding like a seasoned veteran, folks decided Murray would win the battle handily, and that was that. Murray also played well early at OTAs and minicamp, albeit in practice.

Later in June, McCarthy closed the gap, while Murray threw a few curious interceptions in Eagan. Some banged the drum for McCarthy having a real shot at upsetting Murray during the duel in July and August. That brings us up to now: Murray remains the heavy favorite, but based on both men’s performance at minicamp as a whole, McCarthy remains a contender for the job he held indisputedly in 2025.

Expect Murray to Start Nevertheless

It’s fun to daydream about McCarthy barnstorming the summer and taking the QB1 job from Murray against all odds, but it’s also important to be realistic. The competition should not be classified as a “sham,” yet let’s face it, Murray didn’t sign with the Vikings to be a backup quarterback. He had options, and when consulting the Vikings, there just had to be an agreement that he would lead the franchise in 2026 — possibly as a springboard to a long-term relationship.

There’s also Murray’s toolkit versus McCarthy’s. McCarthy is still developing and could turn into something memorable, but Murray already has the experience, arm strength, speed, and passing accuracy. For a team needing a solid option at quarterback this offseason, Murray was absolutely perfect. It’s actually dumbfounding that he fell into Minnesota’s lap.

McCarthy has a chance, but Murray, in all likelihood, will be the Vikings QB1 against the Green Bay Packers in Week 1 at U.S. Bank Stadium. Other theories fall into the “overthinking” bucket.

Zone Coverage‘s Chris Schad noted on the battle, “To make things more intriguing, McCarthy and Murray could be fighting for a bag. McCarthy will be entering the final year of his rookie deal, and the Vikings are trending toward not picking up his fifth-year option next offseason. But if he can beat out Murray, he at least has the chance to change Minnesota’s mind and return to being the quarterback of the future.”

“Murray is in mercenary mode and could also be chasing a new contract. After signing for the $1.2 million veteran minimum, Murray could get 100 times that in his next deal if he plays well for the Vikings, giving him plenty of motivation to succeed. All of this has plenty of layers, and the tentacles run deep. Even fans of other teams who still wish Justin Jefferson were on their team could have an eye on this battle, because it could finally make him crash out and demand a trade.”

The Timeline

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell has stated that he’d like to have a QB1 installed sooner rather than later, but that obviously contradicts the edict of a fair battle. Most NFL quarterback competitions wind down around August 20th, so that may be a fair estimate for when Minnesota reaches a verdict.

Otherwise, Murray or McCarthy may stand off the page right away at training camp, and before the first preseason game, O’Connell could lock in his starter, so the offense gets a boost from the quarterback’s familiarity with it.

A reasonable bet for the quarterback decision is probably mid-August.

Vegas calls Murray the heavy frontrunner but not quite as much as the start of June. McCarthy counterpunched. Minnesota also has a few other notable camp battles, including the OLB3 spot behind Andrew Van Ginkel and Dallas Turner, the punter, nose tackle, and possibly center.

Oddsmakers predict the Vikings will win eight or nine games this season. It’s a forecast that follows the team basically every summer.
