Texas A&M football earns best head coach, Heisman contender in On3 Sports superlatives

Utah Jazz

Texas A&M’s first win over a top-10 non-conference opponent since 1979 was a massive victory for head coach Mike Elko and his young quarterback Marcel Reed.

Reed’s outstanding performance against one of the most highly-touted secondaries in the country landed him a spot, along with Elko, on On3 Sports analyst Zak Herbstreit’s Week 3 superlatives. In the 41-40 comeback win over Notre Dame, Reed threw for 360 yards, two touchdowns and just one interception, while also rushing for 37 yards on seven attempts.

In an electric environment in South Bend, Indiana, Elko and the sophomore gunslinger shattered the national narrative surrounding Texas A&M’s inability to secure top-ranked matchups when it mattered most. When the clock hit zero on Saturday night at Notre Dame Stadium, the Aggies were crowned the victors and moved to 3-0 on the 2025 campaign.

For that reason, the Maroon and White representatives earned their place on Herbstreit’s weekly list of the best and worst moments from college football:

Elko will be the first to say it was not the cleanest performance from the Aggies this weekend. Some aspects will need improving moving into this week of rest, especially on the defensive unit that allowed Notre Dame to have great success running the ball. This is no discredit to Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price, but Texas A&M’s lackluster work in the trenches and plethora of mistakes influenced the Fighting Irish’s success on the ground.

Again, this week is one where Elko will be able to watch film and correct any mistakes and miscommunications before a talented Auburn squad rolls into town next Saturday.

Reed and Texas A&M’s offensive unit are firing on all cylinders, however. The Nashville, Tennessee, native has well-earned his spot on the potential Heisman Trophy candidates through just three weeks of football. Reed has totaled 869 passing yards and nine passing touchdowns, with 142 yards and one score on the ground.

Heading into Week 4, the Aggies have scored 127 total points (42.3 average points per game) in three games. Reed’s contributions at the helm and connecting with wideouts like Mario Craver, who leads FBS with 443 receiving yards this season, have been a major factor in the team’s ability to score at will.

The country will find out more about what this team is truly made of, including Reed’s ability to perform consistently when Texas A&M faces the Tigers at Kyle Field in Week 5.
