WNBA Finals: Phoenix star Satou Sabally ruled out for Game 4 due to concussion

Phoenix Suns

If the Phoenix Mercury are going to force a historic comeback and win the WNBA Finals, they’ll need to begin that journey without star Satou Sabally. The star forward was ruled out for Game 4 due to a concussion she sustained at the end of the team’s 90-88 loss in Game 3 on Wednesday.

The Mercury announced the news Thursday.

Sabally sustained the injury in the fourth quarter of that contest. While fighting to grab a rebound, Sabally got tangled up with Las Vegas Aces guard Jackie Young. As Sabally was pulled to the ground, she banged her head off of Aces forward Kierstan Bell’s knee.

The play — which resulted in Bell being issued a foul — looked brutal on replay.

Sabally was initially tended to by players and staff. She attempted to walk off the court with help, but needed to sit back down for a bit. Sabally was eventually helped off the court and into the locker room. She did not return to the contest.

Her absence may have been the difference in a tight loss for the Mercury. Despite trailing by 17 points, the Mercury rallied to tie the game with a minute to go. But Aces star — and WNBA MVP — A’ja Wilson drained a shot in the final seconds to give the Aces the win and the 3-0 lead in the series.

Prior to leaving the contest, Sabally was a major force for the Mercury. She led the team with 24 points before leaving the game. Sabally also added five rebounds and three assists.
