Sesko Scrutiny Highlights Manchester United’s Transfer Gamble

Manchester United’s decision to overhaul their forward line this summer was always going to attract scrutiny, but few anticipated the level of external criticism already emerging around Benjamin Sesko’s arrival. Credit must go to United in Focus for highlighting the growing divide between internal belief and external scepticism.

The Slovenian striker arrived from RB Leipzig in a £73m deal as the final piece of a three-man attacking rebuild. Matheus Cunha was first through the door, followed by a prolonged pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo, before United struck late for Sesko. Now settled under Ruben Amorim, who is in his second season in charge, Sesko has started to repay that faith with two goals in his last two games.

His impact has been immediate and symbolic. He was brought in to replace Rasmus Hojlund, and has already achieved half of the Dane’s Premier League goal tally from last season. Amorim has made it clear that this is a long-term project, insisting Sesko will stay for years at United.

Agent Criticism Sparks Debate Over Timing

Despite the fast start, not everyone is convinced. United in Focus reported that The Athletic questioned 20 football agents, many of whom condemned the deal. One declared it was “Way too much money and much too soon”. Another insisted “They were pressurised into making that signing.” A third was even harsher, branding it “A lot of money for not much of a pedigree.”

This criticism is not entirely without context. Hojlund struggled under similar expectations last season, burdened by being United’s only striking option. Rather than seeking an experienced forward, Ineos doubled down on youth and upside, favouring long-term value over proven track records.

Mentality Separates Sesko From His Predecessors

Where Sesko stands apart is mindset. Since his move to Manchester, he has displayed an elite mentality, and that is exactly what it takes to survive the spotlight at United. After a few frustrating weeks on the bench, he has now cemented his place in Amorim’s starting XI.

Crucially, he is surrounded by far greater attacking maturity. With Mbeumo, Cunha and Bruno Fernandes contributing creatively and statistically, he is not required to shoulder the entire scoring load.

Foundation For Growth Under Amorim

Amorim is pleased with Sesko’s start, and stylistically, the fit appears natural. The noise surrounding his price tag may linger, but narratives shift with goals. If Sesko keeps producing, no agent comment will matter.

From a Manchester United supporter’s perspective, this criticism almost feels recycled from last year. When Rasmus Hojlund arrived, people said he was too raw, too young and too expensive. Yes, he struggled, but the system around him was chaos. With Ruben Amorim now in his second season, that chaos has turned into structure.

Sesko already looks more composed in front of goal than Hojlund did at this stage. He has the stature of a traditional number nine but moves like a modern forward. More importantly, he does not seem fazed by the pressure. Goals against Sunderland and early league opposition are just the start. Fans can already sense that he carries himself like someone who expects to succeed.

The agents questioning the signing are probably annoyed that a talent they once tried to place elsewhere has landed at Old Trafford. History suggests that United thrive when outsiders doubt them. If Sesko scores ten league goals before Christmas, nobody will be calling it “Way too much money and much too soon”. They will be calling it a bargain secured early.
