The Buffalo Bills will be without defensive end Michael Hoecht for the remainder of the season after he suffered an Achilles injury during their Week 9 win against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The loss adds to a growing list of defensive absences that will force head coach Sean McDermott to lean on younger players moving forward.

McDermott has identified several defenders who are expected to see expanded roles in the coming weeks.

Safety Jordan Hancock, cornerback Maxwell Hairston, defensive tackle Deone Walker and safety Cole Bishop are among those who will be called on to fill the gaps.

In addition, McDermott called for rookie defensive end Landon Jackson to impress.

“He needs to step up,” McDermott said.

Jackson has appeared in just two games this season and, though healthy, has been inactive for every other contest.

That reality is difficult to reconcile with his status as a third-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, a spot typically reserved for players expected to contribute immediately or develop into starters.

His prolonged absence from the game-day roster has raised questions about his readiness and development.

Depth along the defensive line may have limited his opportunities early in the year, but injuries to Ed Oliver and Hoecht have opened a path to playing time.

Buffalo now faces an evaluation period with Jackson.

The additional snaps he receives in the coming weeks will determine whether he can translate his college production to the NFL.

As Super Bowl contenders, the Bills need answers sooner rather than later.
