The playoffs are about to kick off in the “Big 4” states of California, Georgia, Florida, and Texas, and the race for the national championship is suddenly wide open.

The No. 1/SN No. 1 IMG Academy [Bradenton, FL] Ascenders’ decision to cancel their scheduled game against the St. Frances Academy [Baltimore, MD] Panthers last Friday night means that the nation’s top-ranked team has completed its season. IMG Academy almost certainly controlled its own destiny heading into last week; a win over St. Frances Academy would have been the statement the Ascenders needed on their resume to seal the deal for a national title.

Now, unfortunately, by choosing to rest on their laurels, IMG Academy will need some help (i.e., upsets galore) to maintain their position at the top of The Sporting News High School Football Top 25. With teams in California, Georgia, and Texas, in particular, padding their respective resumes in the weeks to come, the Ascenders are likely to be passed up in a season that still has six weeks to go. It appears it won’t be a kind month and a half for the boys from the Sunshine State.
