The Buffalo Bills have a defensive-minded head coach in Sean McDermott. That’s why watching them struggle so much this season is somewhat surprising.

With that in mind, former NFL quarterback Orlovsky dug deep into the tape and identified the Bills’ “fatal flaw” as their run defense against motion.

Against motion, the Bills rank second-to-last in the league in rushing touchdowns allowed (7), third-worst in rushing yards allowed (626), and fifth-worst in yards per rush allowed (5.4). McDermott has failed to make the necessary adjustments, and the front office didn’t make any moves before the NFL trade deadline to solve it, either.

Add their lack of a primary pass catcher on offense to the mix, and it’s clear that Buffalo might not have what it takes to win the AFC East for a sixth straight season.

Teams that have defeated the Bills this season have followed a simple formula: Don’t let them establish the run and James Cook to get into a rhythm, and run the ball against them. It has worked over and over.

Buffalo has arguably the best quarterback in the game. Then again, as good as Josh Allen is, this is a team sport, and there’s only so much he can do when his wide receivers can’t get open and his defense can’t get off the field.

The Bills don’t look like a serious Super Bowl contender. With the clock ticking, they might not have what it takes to become one.
