TAMPA, Fla. — When the Orioles on Sunday listed their probable starters against the Rays this week, it was clear some sort of roster move was on the horizon.
Baltimore didn’t list a starter for Wednesday, creating a hole that could be filled by left-hander Trevor Rogers, who has spent the past three weeks in Triple-A waiting for a rotation spot to open up.
That happened Monday afternoon when the Orioles placed starting pitcher Cade Povich on the 15-day injured list with left hip inflammation, the club announced ahead of its series opener against the Rays.
Reliever Colin Selby was recalled to provide bullpen depth, presumably until Wednesday when Rogers or another starting pitcher is recalled from Triple-A to make that start. It’s also possible the Orioles could go with a bullpen game for that contest.
Povich, 25, pitched 3 2/3 innings in Sunday’s 11-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels. Povich, the bulk reliever after opener Scott Blewett, didn’t allow an earned run while striking out four.
The start to the former top 100 pitching prospect’s MLB career has been up and down thus far. While he’s increased his strikeout rate to a solid 23.9% this season and given the Orioles a chance to win most of his starts, his ERA is 5.15, which would be fourth-worst among MLB starters if he had enough innings to qualify.
Selby, 27, has thrown 3 2/3 innings for the Orioles this season — allowing two runs while striking out five. The right-hander has a 3.24 ERA and impressive 31.5% strikeout rate in Triple-A this year.
In late May, Rogers delivered the best start by an Orioles pitcher this season when he blanked the Boston Red Sox to help prevent the Orioles from dropping to 19 games below .500. Baltimore has since gone 14-6 to resuscitate its season.
