LOS ANGELES — Manny Machado’s awakening just might carry the third baseman to an All-Star starting lineup for the second time as a Padre.
The 32-year-old veteran leads all NL third baseman in votes at the first check-in, more than double the next-best performer.
Machado has 955,122 votes, while the Dodgers’ Max Muncy has 415,750.
No other Padre is currently in position to advance past Phase 1 voting, which will conclude 9 a.m. June 26.
The top two vote-getters at each position (six outfielders) will advance to the next phase.
The only Padre within reasonable striking distance is right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr., who is eighth with 434,955 votes; the Braves’ Ronald Acuña Jr. is sixth with 596,363.
Machado is third among all NL hitters with a .316 average and ninth with an .876 OPS. He has a .316/.376/.500 batting line on the season and has hit seven of his 10 homers over his last 22 games (.337/.381/.618).
Tatis still leads the Padres with 13 homers, but is hitting .225/.308/.377 over his last 38 games.
