Padres pregame: Stacking up against Shohei Ohtani, the hitter and pitcher

San Diego Padres

LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani’s blast off Dylan Cease in Game 1 of last’s NLDS turned the tide that day, but he’s largely been held check as a hitter against the Padres.

At least in the regular season.

Through 27 games, Ohtani is hitting .239/.343/.409  with two homers over 105 plate appearances. That includes a .231/.286/.462 line in three games last week at Petco Park.

They’ve had even more relative success against Ohtani’s right arm.

Again in a small sample, as they touched him for five runs in five innings — including home runs from Jake Cronenworth and Xander Bogaerts — in their only meeting in July 2023. Ohtani had season-ending surgery that September.

Both worlds are colliding again on Monday as Ohtani will serve as both the DH and the starting pitcher for a 7:10 p.m. start on Padres.TV to begin a four-game series.

The start is technically as an opener as Ohtani has been working his arm back into shape in sim games while serving as the Dodgers’ designated hitter, where he has paired 25 homers with a .297/.393/.642 batting line.

Ohtani’s start could be as short as one inning as the Dodgers are easing him back from a second Tommy John surgery after a 22-month hiatus. Ohtani has a 3.01 ERA in 481⅔ innings in the majors as a pitcher. He’s faced the Padres just once as a pitcher, allowing five runs in five innings in July 2023, some two months before needing another elbow reconstruction.

Here is the lineup that Ohtani will face:

As for the Padres, the right-handed Cease (2-5, 4.28 ERA) is coming off his first quality start since May 20, as he struck out a season-high 11 batters over seven shutout innings in beating the Dodgers. Cease also walked a season-high five batters in the win, his first since April 2. Cease has a 5.65 ERA in seven starts this year away from Petco Park.
