Tigers option rookie to Toledo as newly acquired veteran joins bullpen

DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers optioned rookie right-hander Tyler Owens to Triple-A Toledo to create a roster spot for newly acquired veteran right-hander Carlos Hernández. Hernández, who was claimed off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday , reported directly to Comerica Park for the Tigers’ series opener on Tuesday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates . Owens’ second stint with the Tigers lasted only one day. He was recalled before Sunday’s game to take the spot of veteran reliever John Brebbia , who was designated for assignment. But it was only a stopgap move. Hernández is now essentially taking Brebbia’s spot — including his No. 49 jersey. Owens, 24, was acquired from the Texas
