Padres minors: Luis Campusano hits 14th homer, Brandon Valenzuela keys Missions win

San Diego Padres

Luis Campusano powered Triple-A El Paso’s win on Wednesday from an irregular spot.

The 26-year-old catcher hit his 14th homer and doubled while playing nine innings at first base in a 7-3 win over visiting Las Vegas.

The start at first base was his fifth of the season and his 14th in the minors. Campusano was strictly a DH during his stints in the majors this year as the Padres have leaned into Elias Díaz and Martín Maldonado behind the plate despite their lack of offense.

Campusano’s 14th home run tied him from the most in the Padres system this year with Trenton Brooks, who is currently DHing in the minors.

Campusano is hitting .321/.440/.617 in 54 games with El Paso. He was 0-for-18 in the majors.

Second baseman Nate Mondou (.781 OPS) went 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Left fielder Forrest Wall (.807 OPS) went 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Center fielder Brandon Locrkidge (1.119 OPS) went 2-for-5.

Left-hander Jackson Wolf (2-1, 7.02 ERA) struck out six over six innings of one-run ball for the win.

El Paso is 48-41.
