Four days from the All-Star break, Manny Machado still has not taken a game off this year.
He has had a handful of “half-days” off.
Thursday’s series finale will be one of those days as Machado will serve as the DH for the 6:40 p.m. start on Padres.TV. The Padres are looking to split this four-game series with Arizona. The Diamondbacks have won four of six so far to start the season series.

It will be Machado’s ninth start at DH. He is hitting .100/.206/.100 with two RBIs in 34 plate appearances as a DH and a .304/.361/.509 hitter in 357 plate appearances at the Padres’ third baseman.
Machado is the lone Padre to play in all 92 games this season.
He collected his 2000th career hit on Monday, but went 0-for-7 over two ensuing games and is hitting .194/.254/.369 over his last 26 games.
With Machado at DH, Jose Iglesias (.540 OPS) will get the start at third base and bat seventh, ahead of second baseman Jake Cronenworth (.763 OPS), who is down in the order against Diamondbacks left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez.
Gavin Sheets (.771 OPS) will play left field and bat fourth and center fielder Jackson Merrill (.717 OPS) will drop down to sixth against the left-hander.
Merrill is hitless in his last four games and hitting .148/.243/.180 in 16 games (70 plate appearances) since returning from his concussion.

Thursday’s pitching matchup
D-backs LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (3-5, 5.78 ERA)
Last year’s big free agent prize has a 5.49 ERA in his 25 starts with the Diamondbacks. He’s completed at least six innings in just four of his 15 starts this year and he is coming off season-highs in hits (12) and runs (9) in his July 4 start against the Royals. Rodriguez threw 4⅔ scoreless innings last year against the Padres. This will be his first start against them this year.
Here is how Rodriguez has fared against current Padres:

Padres RHP Randy Vásquez (3-4, 3.79 ERA)
He has quality starts in two of his last three starts despite all kinds of traffic — 17 hits, seven walks and six strikeouts in 17⅓ innings. The Padres won all three games. Vásquez posted a 2.37 ERA across three no-decisions last year against the Diamondbacks, striking out 13 against two walks over 19 innings. This is his first start this year against Arizona.
