San Diego Padres (50-43, 3rd in NL West)

The Padres have split their last 10 games at a time when the Dodgers have lost six straight, so they’re deficit is still 5½ games behind Los Angeles. The Padres are a half-game behind the Giants in the race for the NL’s third wild-card spot.

Phillies LHP Ranger Suarez (7-2, 1.99 ERA)   |   He has allowed one run or less in each of his last five starts (1.07 ERA), striking out 35 against eight walks over 33⅔ innings. Suarez is 3-0 with a 2.03 ERA in seven games (four starts) in his career against the Padres. He faced them twice last year, striking out 12 over 14 innings (1.29 ERA).

Padres RHP Ryan Bergert (1-0, 2.67 ERA)   |   He’s expected to come off the injured list (forearm contusion) after needing just one rehab start at Triple-A El Paso (4⅔ IP, 4 ER). Bergert has a 3.13 ERA in five starts (23 IP), striking out 21 against 12 walks. The rookie has topped out at 5⅓ innings so far in the majors.

Saturday

Phillies RHP Zack Wheeler (9-3, 2.17 ERA)   |   He leads the majors with 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings and 5.7 hits per nine innings. The 35-year-old ace beat the Padres with 10 strikeouts over eight shutout innings last week in Philadelphia. He was out hit—a homer—shy of a perfect game in his last start and has allowed one run or fewer in nine of his last 10 starts (1.25 ERA).

Padres RHP Yu Darvish (0-1, 4.91 ERA)   |   The 35-year-old veteran threw 41 of his 63 pitches for strikes in Monday’s season debut, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks in 3 ⅔ innings in a loss. Darvish struck out five. He has a 2.15 ERA in eight starts against the Phillies, the last in 2023 in a win (6 IP, 1 ER). Darvish had a 2.77 ERA in two starts against the Phillies in the 2022 NLCS.

Sunday

Phillies LHP Cristopher Sanchez (7-2, 2.59 ERA)   |   He has allowed two runs or less in eight straight starts (1.84 ERA), which includes beating the Padres with seven innings of one-run ball last week in Philadelphia. Sanchez has a 15-to-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 19 innings in three career starts (2.37 ERA) against the Padres.

Padres RHP Nick Pivetta (9-2, 3.07 ERA)   |   The former Philly pitched the Padres to their only win in Philadelphia last week, striking out six over six innings of one-run ball. Pivetta has allowed one run over his last three starts (0.48 ERA). He has a 2.30 ERA in 10 starts so far at Petco Park.
