Sean Payton on Week 1 play calling: ‘I have to be a lot better’

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix had a game to forget in Week 1, but not all of the blame fell squarely on him for the offense’s struggles against the Tennessee Titans.

Three days after the game, the Broncos hit the practice field on Wednesday, and after reviewing the film, coach Sean Payton admitted that he also had an off day in Week 1.

“I don’t know how many games I’ve called, but that’s one of them where I came away from it like, ‘I have to be a lot better,'” Payton said. “It was one of those games, especially early. In that self-check, in that process and the day after, if you will, if you’re not careful, sometimes the game can be over and you’re on to the next opponent. You haven’t really — you’ve heard me use that term debrief — properly. We’re really trying to pay attention to that, so that regardless of the outcome, this accelerated curve that everyone’s on where everyone’s in a race here these first four weeks, we have to be leading the way in all areas.”

Despite Nix and his coach’s struggles, Denver ultimately won the game, 20-12. But Payton didn’t want that victory to overshadow the room for improvement. So how does Payton want to improve his play calling?

“If you look at the down and distance, the hash mark, some of the calls… It would be too hard to explain it all,” Payton said. “From a timing standpoint, that relationship where when I give a certain play… At the end of the game, we were all on the same [page]. That was going to be an aggressive play and we were all comfortable with it. It’s more of some of the early plays in the first half. Then it’s also cleaning up the details within the framework, whether it’s run or pass.”

Nix has accepted blame for his struggles, and Payton has admitted his room for improvement.

“The head coach and the quarterback get all the credit when you win and most of the blame when you lose, that’s how it’s always going to be, no matter if it is our reason [why] we were successful or if it was our bad for doing something wrong,” Nix said. “It’s good because I know he’s going to do everything he can to be the best for this team, and they also know that I’ll do the same, so that’s just good leadership from the top.”

Up next for Payton and Nix is a road game against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 2. The coach and quarterback will look to have a bounce-back performance after an underwhelming start to the season.
