Orioles roster updates: Albert Suárez heads to IL, Chayce McDermott recalled

CHICAGO — Chayce McDermott is getting his chance in the Orioles’ bullpen, but it’s come at a cost.

The Orioles recalled McDermott, their top pitching prospect entering the season, from Triple-A Norfolk on Monday and placed right-hander Albert Suárez on the 15-day injured list with elbow discomfort.

Baltimore also announced moves to recall right-hander Yaramil Hiraldo, claim left-hander José Castillo off waivers from the Seattle Mariners and designate right-handed Carson Ragsdale for assignment.

McDermott, 27, converted from starter to reliever earlier this season after struggling in Triple-A and two appearances in the majors. He then posted a 1.26 ERA over his final 13 appearances with the Tides before the Orioles added him to their medical taxi squad last week.

It’s a blow for Suárez, however, as he returns to the IL after missing five months with a shoulder injury. The 35-year-old pitched three innings in the Orioles’ 11-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday but didn’t exit with any apparent injury.
