The Auburn Tigers unsurprisingly remained unranked in this week’s US LBM Coaches Poll after losing their second straight contest to open the conference campaign. After starting the year 3-0 and fighting its way into both the Coaches and AP Polls, the Tigers received just 12 votes from coaches around the country this week.
Texas A&M (No. 5), who narrowly squeaked by Auburn on the scoreboard despite completely controlling Saturday’s contest, jumped up four spots to enter the the top 5 for the first time this season. The Aggies join Ole Miss (No. 4) as the only two SEC programs in the top 5.
Texas (No. 7), Oklahoma (No. 8), and Georgia (No. 10) make up the remaining of the five SEC teams in the top 10. Alabama (No. 11) checked in one spot below Georgia despite going into Athens and ending the Bulldogs’ 33-game home winning streak.
LSU (No. 13), Tennessee (No. 15), Vanderbilt (No. 17), and Missouri (No. 18) made up the remaining 11 programs from the conference ranked in the poll. Mississippi State (9 votes) was the only other program from the conference to receive votes along with Auburn.
Now losers of two-straight, the Tigers are unlikely to climb back into the Coaches Poll even with a victory over Georgia next week. While it’s not quite panic time yet on the Plains, things are trending in the wrong direction early for the third year in a row under Hugh Freeze.
A home game next Saturday is sure to get spirits upward, but a Georgia team coming off a loss is not exactly a perfect recipe for a victory. If the Tigers are able to pull out a win in week six, the schedule does soften to the point the team could earn a spot back into the polls before long.
