Sports goods makers Reebok want their logo removed from the kit of Israel’s national team, the Israel Football Association has said.

“We regret that the international company Reebok has apparently decided to bow to embarrassing and completely irrelevant boycott threats,” Israel FA said on Tuesday.

There was no immediate comment from Reebok.

Israel’s news portal ynet reported that American company Reebok, the team’s kit sponsor since last year, had acted upon boycott threats from the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

The BDS movement, which says it is Palestinian-led, opposes goods from Israel as well as cooperation in culture, science and sports. Germany’s parliament rated BDS and its campaign as anti-Semitic in 2019.

Israel FA said it would remove the logo for the time being, and in order not to harm local suppliers, but continue to wear the shirt.

“There are clear laws against boycotts, and we will examine all legal options available to us,” the federation said, adding: “We are confident that a courageous and fair sponsor will be found in the near future.”

Israel is becoming increasingly isolated internationally, including in areas such as sports, culture and science in connection with the Gaza war.

Cycling’s Vuelta a Espana was marred by pro-Palestinian protests and there have been calls to suspended football teams from Israel from international competition.

The national team is due to play World Cup qualifiers in Norway on October 11 and in Italy three days later.
