Recruiting Notebook: Penn State earns crystal balls for multiple top recruits

Philadelphia Eagles

Despite Penn State losing to Oregon in the White Out, the recruiting trail remains hot for James Franklin and company.

Two players received a prediction of Penn State for their future college, with some major talent potentially being the next to announce their commitment to the blue and white. Also, 247Sports updated its rankings making the 247Sports composite rankings change.

Two players make connection to the Nittany Lions

Wide receiver Matthew Gregory received a FongBomb prediction to Penn State from Steve Wiltfong. The Class of 2027 WR would be another high-end addition to the already star-studded class.

Gregory is another in-state product, from Pottstown, Pennsylvania, and is one of the top players in the state. Gregory ranks at No. 59 in the country, the No. 13 wide receiver and No. 4 player in Pennsylvania.

If he were to commit, he would join WR Khalil Taylor in the receiving room as two top receiving commits.

Pittsburgh native Carter Bonner also received a FongBomb within the last day. Another member of the Class of 2027, Bonner is listed as an athlete, playing receiver and cornerback at Penn Hills.

Bonner is the No. 198 player in the country, No. 8 athlete in the country and No. 9 player in Pennsylvania. If the blue and white add both players, the coaching staff can truly say, “The Best in PA, Stay in PA.”

Ranking adjustments

With the adjustment in rankings for recruits, Penn State’s recruiting class has heavily shifted. Entering the weekend as the top recruiting class in the 2027 class, the Nittany Lions dropped to No. 3, falling behind Oklahoma and Miami.

Running back Kemon Spell jumped one spot to No. 8 in the entire country. The in-state running back holds the top spot at his position strong while continuing to prove that he’s one of the best players in the country.

Offensive lineman Layton Von Brandt is now the No. 36 player in the country, while Taylor is the No. 56 player in the class, coming up just short of a five-star, according to 247Sports Composite.

The new rankings, in addition to the additions from the Sooners and Hurricanes, have dropped the blue and white to No. 3. However, the class still has potential to be one of the best under Franklin.
