Padres’ Jose Iglesias, Xander Bogaerts disciplined for umpire confrontation

Both Jose Iglesias and Xander Bogaerts are facing disciplinary action for conduct toward umpires as they exited Wrigley Field through the visiting dugout after the Cubs eliminated the Padres last week in Game 3 of the NL Wild Card Series.

Iglesias was suspended and fined an undisclosed amount while Bogaerts received just an undisclosed fine.

Pending an appeal, Iglesias — who will be a free agent after the end of the World Series — will serve his suspension on the first day he is on a roster in 2026.

Video circulated on social media after reporters exited the visiting clubhouse at Wrigley Field showing Iglesia approaching the umpires with what appeared to be pointed words as they descended into the dugout and into the tunnel. Bogaerts had been hanging over the railing but appeared to animate when one of the umpires responded to Iglesias.

Among the shouting that ensued was someone yelling, “It’s bull-(expletive); open your (bleeping) eyes.”

Security ultimately had to step in between the Padres in the dugout and the umpires.

Bogaerts was asked about a Strike 3 call on a 3-2 fastball to end his at-bat in the top of the ninth inning by plate umpire D.J. Reyburn. MLB’s Game Day app showed the pitch crossed the plate well below the designated strike zone. Jackson Merrill had homered to start the ninth inning to cut the Cubs’ lead to 3-1 and two ensuing hit batters led to the Padres having runners on second and third when Freddy Fermin flied out to center to end the game.

“Talk about it now; what do you want me to do?” Bogaerts said. “It’s a ball. Messed up the whole game, you know? I mean, can’t go back in time and talking about it now won’t change anything. So it was bad, and thank God for ABS next year, because this is terrible.”

Before the start of the postseason, MLB announced that hitters, catchers and pitchers will have the right to challenge pitches they disagree with via an automated ball-strike system (ABS) beginning in 2026. A version of the system has been experimented with in recent years in the minors and was used as a preview this year in spring training.
