Cardinals coach ends routine presser with bonkers Michael Vick reference

Cleveland Guardians

It’s been a rough season so far for the Arizona Cardinals.

After entering 2025 with expectations of at least pushing for a playoff berth, the Cardinals sit at just 2-4 and in last place in the NFC West. This disappointment, naturally, could create friction and tension the longer it persists in Arizona. So much so, that it’s probably paramount for head coach Jonathan Gannon and his players to stay even-keeled and keep their emotions in check. (Well, except for that one time Gannon got fined for making unjust contact with one of his players.)

During Wednesday’s Cardinals press conference, Gannon offered a rather interesting (?) perspective on how he learned to compartmentalize as the leader of a professional football team. When a reporter asked Gannon when he first learned to take the emotion out of coaching through adversity, Gannon tersely replied, “2007, when our quarterback went to jail,” before … eventually walking off the podium.

Gannon is, of course, referencing his time as a defensive quality control coach for the Atlanta Falcons, when Michael Vick began a nearly two-year prison sentence for his role in a dog-fighting ring.

Uh, to put it lightly … this is a WILD situation to bring up out of the blue as your last remarks to the media for a day:

In all fairness to Gannon, bringing up a former player’s prison sentence in an extremely stoic fashion before walking away does add some credence to his ability to separate emotions from his coaching job. Nonetheless, I don’t think anyone in that press conference room had Gannon randomly bringing up Michael Vick’s prison sentence from the 2000s out of the blue on their bingo card.

I mean, how could you really predict that?
