The Orioles have their new manager. Up next, coaching staff changes.
Assistant hitting coaches Tommy Joseph and Sherman Johnson are departing the organization, a source confirmed to The Baltimore Sun. Johnson will join the Chicago White Sox as their minor league hitting coordinator, another source said, and reunite with their director of hitting Ryan Fuller, who was the Orioles’ co-hitting coach from 2022 to 2024.
Joseph and Johnson are the first coaches on the Orioles’ staff to leave since Craig Albernaz was named their incoming manager on Monday. Some turnover was expected after Baltimore fired former manager Brandon Hyde in May and missed the playoffs for the first time in three years. Tony Mansolino, who was a candidate for the Orioles’ manager job, served as interim skipper for the season’s final four and a half months. His future remains unclear.
The Orioles hired Joseph ahead of the 2025 season after he worked in the same capacity for the Seattle Mariners the previous year. Johnson had been part of the Orioles’ organization in various hitting coach roles since 2023, earning a promotion to assistant hitting coach last offseason while retaining his role as minor league upper-level hitting coordinator. Both of them worked under hitting coach Cody Asche, who was also promoted to the position last winter.
Albernaz, 42, is scheduled to address the local media for the first time Tuesday next week along with president of baseball operations Mike Elias and principal owner David Rubenstein.
The Baltimore Banner was first to report that Joseph and Johnson were leaving the Orioles.
