The Minnesota Vikings made plenty of noise this offseason, even though they didn’t make a significant number of swings in free agency.
That was to be expected when they were as cap strapped as they were this offseason. Still, they had the fine fortune of a star quarterback falling into their laps.
Minnesota’s QB Gamble Carries Rare Low-Cost Upside
Whether you consider Kyler Murray a current star or not is debatable. The reality is that he has performed at that level before, and he joined a new franchise after escaping the Arizona Cardinals’ throes. Beyond just joining the Vikings, Minnesota was able to secure his service for just $1.3 million.

Given all the considerations, Kevin O’Connell and his offense have nothing to lose, and ESPN’s Bill Barnwell is all in on the acquisition.
Even if you think Murray is the 20th-best quarterback in football, we’ve seen lesser QBs sign for massive deals in recent years in free agency…The Vikings are getting Murray for the league minimum, with the Cardinals on the hook for the majority of what’s owed this season to the 2019 first overall pick. There’s more to roster-building than sheer surplus value, but no deal has the potential to offer more upside in 2026 than this one.
Barring the opportunity cost of finding out that McCarthy’s suddenly the quarterback they expected to land in the first round two years ago, the Murray acquisition offers virtually no downside and a massive amount of upside.
Murray gives the Vikings a quarterback with 87 professional games under his belt. The results have left something to be desired at times, but they won the lottery in this situation.
The reality is that J.J. McCarthy must have taken substantial leaps forward this offseason, even to be considered for the starting job. Minnesota now has a safety net against that. Early returns from between the ears don’t paint a great picture either, and Murray is a guy who just gets it.

If things don’t work out with Murray, the Vikings can let McCarthy take his lumps and are out just $1.3 million while likely drafting another first-round quarterback next season. If they hit, though, they have their franchise piece and get negotiating rights with a guy who was going to get paid well on the open market.
Be like Bill Barnwell. There was no way this one could lose.
