Dianna Russini Invades Vikings Social Media

Minnesota Vikings

We should have known — eventually, some way or another, Dianna Russini, formerly of The Athletic and ESPN, would find her way into Minnesota Vikings-themed social media after her alleged scandal broke a few months ago. Russini resigned from The Athletic amid scrutiny over the alleged nature of her relationship with Mike Vrabel, a messy media story that has since kept her name circulating NFL corners she once covered.

Russini has also publicly admitted to using her clout as a pal of NFL coaches to wiggle out of driving infractions, and as it turns out, she did exactly that by name-dropping Kevin O’Connell and insulting his quarterback along the way.

McCarthy’s injury, Sam Darnold’s strong summer, and O’Connell’s career path as Minnesota navigated another important quarterback transition before the regular season inside the organization’s facility that day. The Tape

The Center Square‘s Adam Herbets published the Russini traffic-stop story on Monday, noting, “Police body camera video obtained by The Center Square shows former NFL insider Dianna Russini name-dropping her way out of a texting-while-driving ticket, possibly with her children in the car.”

“Officer Felice Bonanno told Russini that he watched her ‘obviously on your phone for a while,’ but he allowed Russini to get off with a warning after she showed him text messages between her and the head coach of his favorite football team, the Minnesota Vikings. Messages between Russini and Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell were blurred by the Ridgewood Police Department, presumably for privacy reasons.”

To talk her way out of a ticket, Russini told the officer, among other conversational items, “I’m a Vikings fan, unfortunately. I love the Vikings, KOC is awesome. Your quarterback sucks though.”

Here’s the video:

The incident occurred on January 19, 2026, at 9:40 a.m. in Ridgewood, New Jersey — not in the Twin Cities.

The Implication

The fallout of the Russini traffic stop, at least from a Vikings perspective, is as rampant as it is conspiratorial.

The Vikings fired general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah in late January — 11 days after the Russini stop — and Russini was a key player in breaking the story, initially saying his paternity leave might’ve been involved in the decision to fire him but later walking that theory back. The hypothesis goes like this: if Russini and O’Connell were connected via text, and Russini claimed McCarthy “sucks,” she could have gathered that assessment from O’Connell personally.

That is — O’Connell isn’t high on McCarthy, or so goes the theory. Eight weeks after the traffic stop, Minnesota signed Kyler Murray to compete with McCarthy for the QB1 job this summer.

SKOR North‘s Thor Nystrom tweeted, “Dianna Russini broke Kwesi’s firing. With a paternity leave anecdote she walked back after backlash, clarifying Vikings were supportive. Last spring she pushed Rodgers to MN while trashing a 22-year-old who hadn’t taken a snap. She had a goldmine Vikings source. Any guesses?”

That tweet implies that O’Connell wanted Aaron Rodgers in the 2025 offseason, and because Russini led the charge in promoting that possibility — Rodgers to the Vikings — O’Connell must’ve been using Russini to go behind Adofo-Mensah’s back in the court of public opinion.

The situation also seems to suggest that O’Connell did not have the final say on the quarterback roster during the Adofo-Mensah era.

Overall, it’s all hearsay and speculation, which, of course, is irresistible for some on Twitter (X) and Facebook.

Another Awful Offseason Moment for McCarthy

The 2025 offseason was a breeze for McCarthy. The Vikings cleared the runway by letting Sam Darnold walk, publicly signaling that the QB1 job was essentially his.

This offseason, however, has been far more muddled. The departure of Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, the GM who drafted McCarthy, was a massive blow for the young passer. The change gives the Vikings’ owners an easy out if McCarthy doesn’t pan out, since the person who selected him is no longer in charge.

The arrival of Murray further complicated matters. Murray isn’t coming to Minnesota to hold a clipboard and wait for McCarthy to develop. As a former franchise quarterback, he will expect to win the QB job outright.

Carson Wentz added another layer of competition. He likely sees a clear path to the QB2 position, especially given McCarthy’s lingering injury history.

Then, Justin Jefferson ratcheted up the pressure. When a team’s best player publicly challenges the quarterback to elevate his performance, it often indicates underlying issues and a less-than-smooth offseason behind the scenes. He recently and publicly challenged all Vikings quarterbacks to “step up’ this summer.

A year ago, McCarthy had the easiest path imaginable. Now, he has Russini saying he sucks.

Will It Blow Over?

In all likelihood, the Russini video will amount to nothing other than making her look silly. Journalists talk to coaches all the time; it’s their job.

Any wild theories about O’Connell using Russini to go behind Adofo-Mensah’s back are unsubstantiated and just internet fuel. McCarthy is also still on the Vikings’ roster. And Adofo-Mensah now works for the San Francisco 49ers.
