Browns OC Tommy Rees linked to newly-vacant head coaching gig at UCLA

The Cleveland Browns sit with their third offensive coordinator in the last three years, and could make it four-in-four as Tommy Rees has been linked to a vacant college football head coaching gig.

UCLA just fired head coach DeShaun Foster after just one full season and a measly 0-3 start in Southern California. Things came to a head this past weekend when the Bruins were blown out at home against New Mexico. Given the location, academic standards, program history, and more, UCLA should be a desirable job despite the lack of recent success.

And Rees has ties to the area and the program. This is why ESPN named him as a potential candidate for the gig:

“He was born in Los Angeles and has ties to the UCLA program through his father, Bill, a Bruins assistant from 1979 to 1994 under Terry Donahue. Tommy Rees has quickly risen up the coaching ranks, earning offensive coordinator titles at Notre Dame, where he played quarterback, as well as Alabama, and now the NFL’s Cleveland Browns. Just 33, Rees was a strong candidate for North Carolina’s head-coaching vacancy this past offseason and likely will be leading his own team in the near future.”

At the college level, Rees has spent time as the offensive coordinator at both Notre Dame and Alabama. He was the runner-up for the gig at the University of North Carolina to former Browns head coach Bill Belichick. This is likely a decision the Tar Heels brass regrets. Should the Browns move on from the staff after this season, or should Rees get the inkling to run his own program, UCLA may just be the gig for him.

We are only in Week 3 of the NFL season, but things are already heating up in Berea.
