Raiders OL needs to create more for Ashton Jeanty

Minnesota Timberwolves

The Las Vegas Raiders couldn’t get running back Ashton Jeanty going in Monday Night Football’s 20-9 Week 2 defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers. The rookie No. 6 overall pick rushed for 43 yards via 11 carries, averaging a lackluster 3.9 yards per carry.

The Raiders’ offensive line has struggled to create rushing lanes. It was a similar storyline in Week 1, a 20-13 victory over the New England Patriots, when Jeanty rushed for 38 yards and a touchdown via 19 carries, or 2.0 yards per carry. The breakout hasn’t arrived yet.

A stat recently graced the social media timeline that indicates why Jeanty hasn’t enjoyed a breakout performance yet. The former Boise State standout gained -6 yards before contact in Week 1, according to ESPN’s analytics department. It was similar in Week 2, with Jeanty gaining three yards before contact.

Jeanty is consistently getting hit behind the line of scrimmage.

Pete Carroll and Chip Kelly need to sort through their offensive line issues. Alex Cappa was a liability in Week 2. Jackson Powers-Johnson, DJ Glaze, and Dylan Parham haven’t been terrific run blockers either. Kolton Miller and Jordan Meredith are the Raiders’ highest-graded run blockers according to Pro Football Focus through two weeks.

Jeanty has created opportunities for himself by occasionally running around or through defenders, but the Raiders need to do a better job giving him rushing lanes to exploit.
