The Marietta women’s volleyball team needed a big effort — and it got that from junior Jillian Fellers.
The 5-foot-10 senior outside hitter and a Marlington High graduate had a team-high 20 kills and 12 digs to lead the Pioneers to a 3-1 upset victory over 15th-ranked Otterbein on Oct. 8. That helped the team go to 11-4 overall and 2-0 in OAC play.
Fellers is having another big season for Marietta. She entered last weekend leading the team in kills with 193 and points with 216.0 and is second in digs with 181. She also has 13 service aces and 10 assists.
Her effort against Otterbein was her seventh double-double of the season. She also had 20 kills in a 3-0 victory over Case Western Reserve on Sept. 13.
Fellers is fourth in the Marietta record book in kills with 1,155 and has 926 digs in 97 matches and 344 sets. She earned American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American honorable mention and was an AVCA All-Region first team pick last season. She also named first-team All-OAC team for the second straight year.
Colin Cernansky (Marlington)
The freshman came up with a big effort for the Ohio State men’s cross country team at the Gans Creek Classic on Sept. 26 in Columbia, Mo. Competing in the 8,000-meter open race, Cernansky finished 20th out of 251 runners and was the second freshman to cross the finish line. His time was 25:26.6. He opened the season by finishing 74th out of 294 entrants in the Spartan Invitational on Sept. 12 at Michigan State with an 8K time of 26:21.2.
Jayden Ballard (Massillon)
The 6-2, 205-pound redshirt senior wide receiver is a deep threat for the Wisconsin football team (2-4, 0-3 Big Ten). Ballard, who spent his previous four seasons at Ohio State, has caught seven passes for 150 yards with a pair of touchdowns through the first five games. That’s 30 yards per reception. His touchdowns covered 58 and 41 yards, the latter against No. 8 Alabama.
Jill Taylor (Green)
The freshman is a key defender for the Trine (Ind.) women’s soccer team (5-3-3, 1-1 Michigan Collegiate Athletic Association). Taylor is second on the team in minutes played with 981 and has helped hold opponents to just 10 goals with five shutouts. She has had two shots, one on goal, but is still looking for her first collegiate point.
Owen Pukys (Louisville)
The senior was seventh out of 326 finishers in the Gold Division race for the Dayton men’s cross country team at the Louisville Classic last Saturday in Kentucky. Pukys covered the 8,000 meters in a personal-record 23:51.4. He finished first for the Flyers, who ended up eighth out of 32 teams. Pukys finished first out of 105 runners at the George Bales Invite Sept. 19 in Kalamazoo, Mich. with an 8K time of 24:30.8.
Ty Boughman (Perry)
The senior kicker was named OAC Special Teams Player of the Week on Oct. 6 after a big effort for the 1-3 Capital football team in a 30-27 loss to Heidelberg last Saturday. Boughman kicked the first two field goals of his career, one for 32 yards and the other for 21 yards. He connected on all three extra points and is 11-for-11 on the season. He also averaged 36.2 yards on six punts, aided by a 50-yarder. and kicked off four times.
Emma Isroff (Lake)
The 6-0 sophomore right side is having a solid all-around season with the Canisius (N.Y.) women’s volleyball team (4-11, 2-3 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference). Isroff has started all 15 matches and played in all 59 sets. She has 106 kills, 98 digs, 26.0 total blocks, 20 service aces and 10 assists. She is third on the team in points with 140.5.
Sydney Wake (Jackson)
The 5-11 junior right side is a key performer on the Gannon women’s volleyball team (12-4, 3-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference). Wake had a match-high 12 kills in a 3-0 victory over Daemen on Oct. 8. On the season, she leads the team with 148 kills and is second in total blocks with 36.0. She has a solid .301 attack percentage.
Emma King (Manchester)
The 5-8 senior forward has two goals for the Akron women’s soccer team (3-6-3, 0-4-2 MAC) — and both were game winners. They came in a 5-3 victory over Southern Indiana and a 2-0 triumph over Wisconsin-Green Bay. She also has two assists.
Olivia Gang (Green)
The graduate student finished 15th for the Toledo women’s cross country team in the 6,000-meter open race at the Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invite Oct. 10 in Chicago. She was the second finisher for the Rockets with a time of 22:22.2. Gang kicked off her fall season by finishing 15th at the Mel Brodt Collegiate Invitational on Sept. 12 in Bowling Green with a 6K time of 22:54.3.
Charlie Christopher (Lake)
The true freshman is seeing more action of late for the Ohio football team (3-3, 1-1 MAC). The 6-0, 227-pound linebacker had five tackles, three unassisted, in a 20-14 loss to Ball State. He had a nice effort in a 52-35 triumph over Gardner-Webb on Sept. 20 in Athens when he also had five tackles.
