Padres’ Leo De Vries headed to All-Star Futures Game

San Diego Padres

The youngest player in the Midwest League, an 18-year-old Leo De Vries was always going to be tested with growing pains.

The Padres, of course, are heavily invested in his future.

Thus, De Vries will represent the Padres in the All-Star Futures Game on July 12 in Atlanta.

Each team is traditionally represented in the showcase preceding the All-Star Game on July 15.

No. 3 in MLB.com’s top-100 prospect rankings and No. 1 in the organization’s top-30, the switch-hitting De Vries is the Padres’ lone prospect headed to Atlanta.

At No. 24, catcher Ethan Salas is the Padres’ only other top-100 prospect, but he’s been on the injured list since April with a back injury. Former Padres prospects to play in the prospect game include Fernando Tatis Jr., Adrian Morejon and Luis Campusano.

De Vries was the high Single-A Midwest League’s player of the month for April, when he paired four homers with a .306/.378/.625 batting line through the first 19 games of the season. He’s hitting .204/.360/.287 with one homer, 13 RBIs and 29 strikeouts over his last 30 games, dragging down the season batting line to .243/.357/.387 through 63 games.

De Vries has also committed 15 errors at shortstop.

De Vries signed for $4.2 million before the 2024 season as arguably the top prospect from last year’s international amateur window. He went on to pair 11 homers with a .237/.361/.441 batting line last year at low Single-A Lake Elsinore and later become the youngest player to homer in the Arizona Fall League since Bryce Harper in 2010.

The All-Star Futures Game will air live on MLB.TV, MLB.com and in the MLB app at 1 p.m. on July 12.
