In the standings
San Diego Padres (45-38, 2nd in NL West)
A ninth-inning loss on Sunday handed the Padres a series loss to start the road trip. They are now 20-24 away from Petco Park, a major reason they are seven games behind the Dodgers in the division and a game out of the NL’s third wild-card spot. The Padres lost five of six last year against the Phillies, including two of three in Philadelphia. The Padres are 3-10 against the Phillies in two years since Philly bounced the Padres out of the 2022 NLCS in five games.
Philadelphia Phillies (49-47, 1st in NL East)
The Phillies have a 1½-game lead over the Mets in the division, are tied with the Cubs for the fourth-best winning percentage in the majors (.583) and have the eighth-best run differential (plus-46). The Phillies are also 26-14 at home. They rank ninth in the majors with a .730 OPS, second in rotation ERA (.330) and 25th in bullpen ERA (.455).

His only start against the Phillies was a loss last year (6 IP, 5 ER).
Phillies RHP Mick Abel (2-1, 3.47 ERA) | The 23-year-old rookie was scheduled to start Friday in Atlanta, but a rain delay washed away the start.
