Less than 24 hours ago, Samuel Basallo was rounding the bases at Camden Yards, a big smile on his face, as fans provided a standing ovation after the 21-year-old slugging sensation’s walk-off homer.
Saturday night, Basallo won’t have the same chance to play hero late in the game.
Basallo exited the Orioles’ game against the Los Angeles Dodgers with an injury after taking a foul tip off his right hand. The Orioles announced that it was right hand discomfort for Basallo, who signed an eight-year, $67 million extension last month just days after his MLB debut.
Trevor Rogers’ 91.8 mph sinker was foul tipped by Dodgers catcher Ben Rortvedt while he was attempting to bunt. Rortvedt — who’s playing in part because All-Star catcher Will Smith recently suffered a bone bruise on his right hand on a similar play — couldn’t get the bunt down, though, and it hit Basallo’s throwing hand while it rested on his right leg.
Basallo initially met with a team trainer and Orioles interim manager Tony Mansolino behind home plate and appeared as if he would stay in the game, but he sailed two warmup throws over second base and continued to shake his hand in obvious discomfort.
The severity of Basallo’s injury is unclear. Mansolino could provide an update after the game, which is also serving as a celebration for the 30th anniversary of Cal Ripken Jr. breaking Lou Gehrig’s consecutive games played streak.
If Basallo has to go on the injured list, he would be the 29th player to do so — and the fifth catcher as the Orioles have been haunted by injuries all season. Starting catcher Adley Rutschman and backup catcher Gary Sánchez are currently on the IL.
