Orioles game Saturday vs. Dodgers, Cal Ripken Jr. 2,131 ceremony delayed

Thirty years ago, the Orioles’ game at Camden Yards was delayed for 22 minutes and 15 seconds as fans gave a standing ovation to Cal Ripken Jr. for breaking Lou Gehrig’s consecutive games played record.

Saturday, on the 30th anniversary of Ripken’s 2,131st straight game played, fans will have to wait to celebrate the Iron Man and watch the Orioles play.

The start of the Orioles’ game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night has been delayed to 7:20 p.m. because of rain. The game was scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m. The pregame ceremony to honor Ripken, originally scheduled for 6:25 p.m., is also being delayed to 6:40 p.m.

Weather forecasts show a significant potential for rain in Baltimore until the 7 p.m. hour and then a small chance of precipitation for the rest of the night.

As part of the anniversary, the B&O Warehouse beyond the right field wall will once again have the iconic banners with the numbers 2,131. Ripken will be driven around the warning track in a red Corvette convertible, just as he was after that game. The following Orioles legends will be in attendance: Harold Baines, Eddie Murray, Mike Mussina, Brady Anderson, Al Bumbry, B.J. Surhoff, Rafael Palmeiro and Jon Miller. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred will also be at Camden Yards.

The Orioles enter Saturday on a four-game winning streak after sweeping the San Diego Padres earlier this week and winning Friday’s series opener. Samuel Basallo, the Orioles’ 21-year-old slugging sensation, launched a walk-off home run Friday, his first career long ball at Camden Yards, to propel Baltimore to a 2-1 victory.

Left-hander Trevor Rogers, the reigning American League Pitcher of the Month, will start for Baltimore (65-76) opposite right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto for the Dodgers (78-63).
