Syracuse outplays, outcoaches Clemson as the Tigers fall to 1-3 on the season

Clemsonfootball’s struggles continued on Saturday as Syracuse walked into Death Valley and handed the Tigers a 34-21 loss.

Dabo Swinney had said his team was just a play or two away from being undefeated, but Syracuse made sure there was never a chance of that. Steve Angeli led the Orange efficiently, throwing for two touchdowns, while Cade Klubnik had career highs in completions and attempts, throwing for three scores but also tossing an interception. Adam Randall was a bright spot, churning out 130 rushing yards, catching a touchdown, and adding big plays on special teams, but even his effort wasn’t enough to pull Clemson back into the game.

The Tigers fell behind early, giving up a touchdown on the opening drive and then losing a short field to Syracuse after an onside kick. For the fourth straight week, Clemson let its opponent score first, and a 95-minute lightning delay in the second half only added to the frustration. This season has already become historically rough, with Clemson starting 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the ACC for the first time in more than a decade, and the home-field advantage in Death Valley has disappeared with three straight losses to Power 4 teams.

Despite the loss, there were glimpses of promise. Bryant Wesco made key plays with two touchdowns and six catches, showing he can still be a reliable weapon. Randall delivered his second 100-yard game of the season, and Will Heldt continued to cause disruption on defense. But the Tigers couldn’t string together enough stops or sustained drives, and Syracuse repeatedly marched up and down the field in the first half to build a lead that Clemson never could overcome.

Now the Tigers will regroup during their first bye week, trying to stop the skid before traveling to North Carolina on October 4. After a season that started worse than anyone expected, the focus will be on finding some consistency and turning the season around.
