The Minnesota Vikings have plenty of cooks in the kitchen at quarterback for 2026, but according to Pro Football Network, Kevin O’Connell’s squad should be considered a landing spot for controversial Texas Tech passer Brendan Sorsby.
Shunned by the NCAA for gambling, including bets on his own team, Sorsby is now on track for the NFL’s Supplemental Draft.
Vikings’ QB Room May Leave Room for One More Longshot Swing

Sorsby Bails on NCAA, Will Enter NFL
Sorsby’s saga has boomeranged all over the place in recent weeks, now tipping toward the NFL.
NBC Sports‘ Charean Williams wrote Monday, “Brendan Sorsby’s college career is finished after two years at Indiana and two years at Cincinnati. He will never play a down at Texas Tech. Sorsby will dismiss the lawsuit in Lubbock County, Texas, that gave him a temporary injunction restoring his NCAA eligibility for 2026. Then, he will apply to enter the NFL supplemental draft.”
Sorsby also issued a vague statement: “I am grateful for the support from my family, my Tech coaching staff, teammates, the community, and so many others who have encouraged me to address and learn more about this important issue. As my journey continues, I remain fully committed to and focused on being the best I can be both on and off the field.”
Assuming his Supplemental Draft plan goes through without hiccups, all 32 teams will be able to “bid” on his services later this month or in July.
PFSN Names the Vikings as a Fit
Of course, because of his sheer talent and upside, the question becomes: where will Sorsby land after his muddy collegiate exit?
PFSN’s Ryan Gosling — not that one — argued Minnesota on Monday: “The usual QB-needy teams should easily be a factor for Brendan Sorsby, particularly the Browns and Jets, who are both projected to have an excess of early and mid-round capital in the 2027 NFL Draft. There are a few more wild cards among them, however, including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Minnesota Vikings, and Pittsburgh Steelers.”
“Pittsburgh and Minnesota, meanwhile, both have prospective starters on one-year deals; Aaron Rodgers is expected to have one last swan song with Mike McCarthy, while Kyler Murray is on a prove-it deal while battling J.J. McCarthy for the starting job.”
Minnesota’s head coach, O’Connell, is known as a “quarterback whisperer,” meaning any time a passer is down on his luck and available, the Vikings usually get a mention. Sorsby is no different.
“The Vikings have two third-round picks in the 2027 NFL Draft, so they could feasibly take the inside line on Sorsby by spending Day 2 supplemental capital, for a tools-rich QB whom Kevin O’Connell would be able to mold,” Gosling continued.
“In either location, Sorsby wouldn’t face immediate pressure to take starting reps, but in Pittsburgh, learning from the apex QB of Sorsby’s stylistic archetype in Rodgers would be particularly advantageous. In Minnesota, Sorsby would present an investment in the type of talent McCarthy has proven not to match, for a potential bargain price.”
Sorsby’s Bio
Sorsby’s physical attributes are ideal: 6-foot-3, 235 pounds, possessing the NFL-ready build evaluators seek. Complementing his stature is undeniable arm talent; he can deliver powerful throws, thread the needle into tight windows, and, when in rhythm, showcase the ability of a future starter.

However, he is undeniably a developmental project with the gambling trail following him. Sorsby tends to abandon the pocket prematurely and requires significant improvement in his decision-making speed. He is not an immediate NFL starter.
But the potential is immense. With proper coaching and patience, Sorsby possesses the tools to succeed. The gambling allegations will persist until he definitively demonstrates they are behind him, which is the crux of his evaluation.
Absent his off-field issues, Sorsby would undoubtedly be discussed as a legitimate 1st-Round prospect for next April’s draft. That is no exaggeration.
Probably Too Much Baggage
While the Vikings are an intriguing landing spot, they are probably all set with quarterbacks who have an array of question marks surrounding their future. Murray hopes to reclaim his career in Minnesota, which could happen rather easily, given his talent. There’s a world where Murray just clicks in Minnesota and remains the QB1 for the next half-decade-plus.

McCarthy is still 23 — one year older than Sorsby — and his career could bend in any direction. Minnesota has Carson Wentz in town for QB3 duty. And Max Brosmer, an undrafted talent from the 2025 class, fills out the group with youthful insurance.
If the Vikings spend a 2027 draft pick on Sorsby in the Supplemental Draft, it might have to wave the white flag on McCarthy or drop Wentz, two scenarios that seem unlikely.
Sorsby has one week to formally declare for the Supplemental Draft, which is almost certainly his preferred path.
